Production of Hydrophilic PP Nonwoven Fabric

Spunbond Nonwoven Fabric

PP Spunbond Nonwoven fabric is made of polypropylene (PP), it has the characteristics of low density, low moisture absorption, high strength, and high elongation, and is widely used in medical hygiene, home decoration, Industrial Wipes, agriculture, and so on. When used as the top layer material of sanitary napkins and diapers, it is required to quickly transfer body fluids to the absorbent core layer below and minimize fluid backflow to maintain dryness and comfort when in contact with the skin. This puts certain requirements on the hydrophilic properties of PP Spunbond Non Woven Fabric.

However, PP material has high crystallinity, regular molecular arrangement, and lacks hydrophilic functional groups on the surface, which cannot meet the hydrophilic requirements of disposable hygiene products such as sanitary napkins and diapers. Therefore, hydrophilic modification processing is needed. There are mainly two methods for hydrophilic modification of PP non-woven fabric: chemical method and physical method.

1) The chemical method includes coating method, which involves attaching a coating to the fabric surface, but it significantly affects the mechanical and breathability properties of the fabric.

2) The physical method includes low-temperature plasma treatment, UV-ozone irradiation, and surface finishing using hydrophilic agents.

Low-temperature plasma treatment activates, etches, breaks chains, and cross-links on the fabric surface without reducing the overall performance of the fabric. UV-ozone irradiation can quickly improve the hydrophilicity of fabric materials. These two hydrophilic modification processes can significantly enhance the hydrophilicity of PP spunbond non-woven fabric, but they are complex in operation and require high equipment requirements, making industrial production difficult at present.

The physical method of surface finishing using hydrophilic agents has the advantages of simple, low cost, good effect, and wide application. It can improve the surface wetting performance and breathability of non-woven fabric without changing its original characteristics. It is widely used in the hygiene products industry as a modification method.
